A message from our Patron, Matthias Schmelz, whose generous support has enabled us to get this project up and running in a very short time.
“I want to be involved because I love turtles and all other animals as well. I believe that human beings have no right to threaten the survival of a species that has been on this planet for millions of years before we appeared. Turtles are beautiful and peaceful animals. They must be saved and protected at any price.”
Matthias Schmelz is a self-made millionaire who made his fortune in direct sales. As well as being an extremely successful businessman, he is a strong advocate of animal rights and nature conservation. His childhood was spent reading books, bird-watching and hiking and at the age of 13, already eager to make a difference, he founded the "Vogel Club", an ornithological society with the aim of protecting animals and educating rural young people.
On a recent visit to Cabo Verde, Matthias realised that there was an urgent need for more turtle conservation activities and immediately offered his help.
Matthias lives in Portugal with his wife, Fernanda and two children, Electra and Fernando.
